Portland Open Studios Hit it Out of the Park...

Portland Open Studios at Directors Park

Portland Open Studios hit it out of the park yesterday...Directors Park that is, in downtown Portland.  I had a grand time doing a couple of quick portrait paintings yesterday among all the talent and skyscrapers. I couldn't even look away long enough for a good pose (above)...so much art, so much  color, so much fun!

And I love being hemmed in by buildings...it's as cozy as a forest, but with more faces.

I was just one of many who peppered the park with a little extra spice.  I got to hold court with the following fabulous Portland Open Studios artists:
Christopher Bibby,, Jason Kappus, Suzy Kitman, Carolyne Landon, Patrick Noe, Theresa Andreas-O’Leary, Barbara Paanakker,  Yer Vue, and many more.

It was like the perfect appetizer before the main entree to come...

There was a fabulous model to draw inspiration from...

I hope you had a chance to visit Directors Park, but if you didn't...please be part of the Portland Open Studios Tour this fall.  Autumn begs a change in palette!

We're Falling for the Northwest

PreOccupied
by Jennifer G Cutshall
Mixed Media on Canvas
48" x 60"
It seems like we are finally falling for the Northwest.  New Mexico was hard to leave and even harder  to forget...
but there's something about the crispness of the air, the rustling of the leaves. Everything and everyone in Portland seems destined for this autumnal season.  There's a bounty to harvest  everywhere...
every neighborhood boasts voluptuous tomatoes plants on sidewalk paths. Chinese lanterns hug the edges of stone cellars while pumpkin vines creep onto the roadways tickling bikers as they zoom by...
How can we resist Portland?  It seems made for us to love...

And to mirror the bounty that surrounds us we've been blessed to be featured in several shows this fall.

The Weeping Field
by Richard Cutshall
11.5" x  6"
In addition to his current work available at the Portland Art Museum Rental Sales Gallery, Richard has a new piece  (The Weeping Field) selected for the Fall show. The Fall show opens Friday October 19, 2012 from 5PM - 8PM.

Bridging The Gap
by Jennifer G Cutshall

Two of Jennifer's pieces were selected for the 99% show at the Wiseman Gallery at Rogue Community College.  Show runs from Halloween through December 7, 2012.

Jennifer has also been invited to be the feature artist at Art on The Ridge Gallery in Seattle from October through December...more information will be posted soon.

And Jennifer's work will be showcased  as part of the Portland Open Studios Tour which opens our studio to the public.

If you're in the Northwest this fall it's ripe with art...

And if you do come to PDX this fall be sure to visit Guardino Gallery, too.  Stephanie Brockway curates an awesome Day of the Dead show at Guardino Gallery in the Alberta Arts District:

Inspired in Ashland, Oregon

The Hanson Howard Gallery
Our favorite stop on our jaunt through this art haven
We sped down to the lovely hippie haven of Ashland, Oregon this weekend.  We had to pick up the last of Richards' work from his Excavation Show (in Grants Pass), so we decided to head a little further south...to stop and smell the patchouli.

And we're so glad we did.  There's so much more to this town than berks and granola ...  art hugs this hamlet and seems to penetrate the way of living.

There's the Shakespeare Festival that pumps the town with an air of something more substantial.  A mime dressed as a bronze statue (of a Shakespearean player) offered up reading cards to the crowd of bystanders... both Richard and I quoted sonnets on cobblestones under a full breasted moon...we left him speechless!

Galleries, bookstores, and boutiques beckoned pedestrians to betray blisters with enticing window displays and friendly store owners.  Even the homeless seemed driven to help the greater good with signs asking for contributions for shelters.

Romantic towns like this stir something elemental in me ...  something about chances and artists and the love of places...real places.   Ashland seems to be what it wants to be. And I ache for places like that.

We had fun going to the First Friday happenings where we met great artisans that seemed eager to chat about their work and make new friends.

On Saturday we sipped coffee and looked at books; Rich quoted excerpts from art books over the stacks. We fed our hunger for the kind of inspiration that begs discovery in every great used bookstore.

But it was just before we hit the road that we stumbled on some great things.  It was at the Hanson Howard gallery.  The level of work in this gallery had us bouncing from piece to piece spotting work we love.  We liked all the artists currently exhibiting, but we particularly liked the work of  Aggie Zed, Sara Swink, and R & J Gumaelius...check it out for yourself:

Or better yet, visit Ashland, Oregon and experience the authentic art ...
of living as only they do it...

Growing up in NY groomed me to look for the genuine and I love to find it...
I found it in this quick jaunt to Ashland.

An Opening to remember...

Welcoming shot from Richard Cutshall's opening
at the Firehouse Gallery in Grants Pass, OR this past  May

There's something about Richard Cutshall's work that makes viewers want to dig deeper.  His Excavation Show was aptly named, his work seems to unearth something from another time... ...another place. At times drawing people in and at other times visitors seemed to be pushed back by the guttural power of his pieces.

All in all, it was a wonderful opening night.  It was evident that viewers got much more than anticipated when they entered the space; the impact of the work showed on their faces.    While some sat quietly gazing, others clamored to have a chance to ask Richard about his inspiration.
Everyone seemed equally awestruck!

We wish you could have been there to share this incredible event with us…
it was truly a lovely show.
